2。5 stars In my view, not one of Grisham's best。I liked the premise, and the dealing with a hostage and ransom demand makes for good fiction fodder。 However I found this one a little slow, what should have been a very tense situation not coming across as overly tense, and an anticlimactic ending。 The cynic in me says the linking the story to The Firm (one of Grisham's better works) was done as a method to sell more books。 For while we have Mitch and Abby McDeere, there's little in this story to 2。5 stars In my view, not one of Grisham's best。I liked the premise, and the dealing with a hostage and ransom demand makes for good fiction fodder。 However I found this one a little slow, what should have been a very tense situation not coming across as overly tense, and an anticlimactic ending。 The cynic in me says the linking the story to The Firm (one of Grisham's better works) was done as a method to sell more books。 For while we have Mitch and Abby McDeere, there's little in this story to link to the events of that book, except for a few memories and referrals to the passing 15 years since events of that novel。 The lead characters could have been almost anyone and not the McDeere's。 。。。more

Not Grisham’s BestSadly this book, while interesting, cannot hold a candle to The Firm。 It takes place 15 years later when Mitch and Abby are back in N。Y。 where Mitch works for a huge law firm。 This time Mitch is taxed with finding funds to ransom the daughter of one of the firms partners who was kidnapped in Libya。 The story lacks the excitement and the characters the interest of The Firm。 Abby’s globe trotting does not ring authentic。 The ending feels rushed with an obvious followup book to co Not Grisham’s BestSadly this book, while interesting, cannot hold a candle to The Firm。 It takes place 15 years later when Mitch and Abby are back in N。Y。 where Mitch works for a huge law firm。 This time Mitch is taxed with finding funds to ransom the daughter of one of the firms partners who was kidnapped in Libya。 The story lacks the excitement and the characters the interest of The Firm。 Abby’s globe trotting does not ring authentic。 The ending feels rushed with an obvious followup book to come 。。。more
Sue,
I enjoyed catching up with the McDeeres。 Life has treated them well in the past 15 years。 It is now 2006, and Mitch is a partner in a massive international law firm。 After an associate is kidnapped, Mitch and Abbie work with his firm and various governments to bring her home。If you are looking for a taut legal drama, you won't find it here。 This is more of a military thriller without the military。 There are moments of action, but it is mostly a lot of negotiations to determine who has her and wh I enjoyed catching up with the McDeeres。 Life has treated them well in the past 15 years。 It is now 2006, and Mitch is a partner in a massive international law firm。 After an associate is kidnapped, Mitch and Abbie work with his firm and various governments to bring her home。If you are looking for a taut legal drama, you won't find it here。 This is more of a military thriller without the military。 There are moments of action, but it is mostly a lot of negotiations to determine who has her and why。 This was a miss for me。 I usually love Grisham's work, but I didn't find the story very captivating。Thanks to Netgalley and Double Day。 I received a complimentary copy of this book。 Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own。 。。。more

If you’re expecting a edge of your seat thriller then you’ll be disappointed。 I was expecting the bad guys from 15 years to get revenge but the story went into a different direction that it could have been any other characters。 A huge letdown。

Not as expectedThis book was more than a disappointment。 Often a sequel, even if not a full sequel , brings a certain satisfaction of what happened next。 I found The Exhange to have a disconnected and boring story line。 I have read many fine John Grisham books。 The Exchange is definitely not one of them。

DisappointedI was really looking forward to this book。 Sadly it is the first and only book of John Grisham’s I didn’t like。 Really enjoyed his other ones。

"The Exchange" was not up to previous John Grisham books。 From the outset, I anticipated the outcome and was not surprised。 From the beginning, the book is about lawyer drama。 If you are a fan of Grisham, do not pay full price。 Wait until it is offered at a lower price。 "The Exchange" was not up to previous John Grisham books。 From the outset, I anticipated the outcome and was not surprised。 From the beginning, the book is about lawyer drama。 If you are a fan of Grisham, do not pay full price。 Wait until it is offered at a lower price。 。。。more

Decided to reread the Firm as well because it had been a few years (or decades!) since I had read it。 This sequel definitely reflects a different era and I'm glad we can bring Mitch and Abby into more modern times。 Unfortunately had a pretty bad cold recently and this was the perfect book to help nurse me back to health。 Decided to reread the Firm as well because it had been a few years (or decades!) since I had read it。 This sequel definitely reflects a different era and I'm glad we can bring Mitch and Abby into more modern times。 Unfortunately had a pretty bad cold recently and this was the perfect book to help nurse me back to health。 。。。more

Lowest score that I have ever given to a John Grisham book。 This partly may have been my fault。 I LOVE John Grisham and think he is an excellent storyteller。 For this book, my expectations may have been too grand。 This was billed as book 2 of the firm and yes, Mitch and Abby are back and there are references to his work in Memphis。。。。。。 but。。。。。。。。 something just didn't work。I expected the fast paced, Mitch saves the day by doing the right thing and controlling the variables to pull it off。 This Lowest score that I have ever given to a John Grisham book。 This partly may have been my fault。 I LOVE John Grisham and think he is an excellent storyteller。 For this book, my expectations may have been too grand。 This was billed as book 2 of the firm and yes, Mitch and Abby are back and there are references to his work in Memphis。。。。。。 but。。。。。。。。 something just didn't work。I expected the fast paced, Mitch saves the day by doing the right thing and controlling the variables to pull it off。 This read more like a plodding kidnapping exchange。 I appreciate the difficulty of returning to known characters, but I went in already liking Mitch and Abby and at the end it was just meh。 You can read this as a stand alone, but I would recommend any of Mr。 Grisham's other books, rather than this story。 This will not keep me from eagerly awaiting the next story as I truly believe Joh Grisham is a truly gifted author。 。。。more

I am normally a BIG John Grisham fan。 I was really looking forward to this sequel, but this was so disappointing。 It was a very linear book - no twists or turns。 One would think that a book with the clever Mitch McDeere would have lots of plot twists and turns。 But not this book。 The premise is a colleague gets kidnapped and the problem is how to find the money to pay the ransom。 Read with low expectations。
Stephanie,
Mitch McDeere is back!I loved every twist and turn of his good heart。 I will forever be a fan of the early Grisham, and that is what this is。 It’s intrigue and legalese and god versus evil。 I’m here for every brief and rabbit pulled out of the hat。
Donna,
Very much like other Grisham books。 And that is a good thing! Lots of countries and people…。

I’ve taken plenty of overnight flights longer than 12 hours in business class or first class。 You could read this, and the midnight boarding, ambien, preflight champagne and wine with dinner would not make you incapable of following the story。 There is no subtlety。 Harvard Law gets mentioned too frequently。 Scott Turow grauuated from there, not Grisham。 Lots of other name brands。 Boy, howdy, was I impressed。When you finish, or give up, you can leave the book in the seat back pouch without regret I’ve taken plenty of overnight flights longer than 12 hours in business class or first class。 You could read this, and the midnight boarding, ambien, preflight champagne and wine with dinner would not make you incapable of following the story。 There is no subtlety。 Harvard Law gets mentioned too frequently。 Scott Turow grauuated from there, not Grisham。 Lots of other name brands。 Boy, howdy, was I impressed。When you finish, or give up, you can leave the book in the seat back pouch without regret。 。。。more

Before reading The Exchange, I decided to first re-read The Firm since it has been 25+ years since the release of The Firm。 That was a mistake, the writing styles for these two books were very different。 The Firm was fast-paced and pulled me into the story and The Exchange was just blah。 This sequel was slow-paced, repetitive, the characters were boring and I didn’t care how it ended。 Which is probably good, because the ending was unsatisfactory so at least I wasn’t terribly let down by the time Before reading The Exchange, I decided to first re-read The Firm since it has been 25+ years since the release of The Firm。 That was a mistake, the writing styles for these two books were very different。 The Firm was fast-paced and pulled me into the story and The Exchange was just blah。 This sequel was slow-paced, repetitive, the characters were boring and I didn’t care how it ended。 Which is probably good, because the ending was unsatisfactory so at least I wasn’t terribly let down by the time I finished。 I wanted to know more backstory, like how Mitch and Abby were able to return to using their names and not fear the mob。 Truly, The Exchange, did not need to be a sequel to The Firm, Grisham could have written this as a separate book since there wasn’t much from the McDeere’s history integrated into the new storyline。 Quite possibly might have rated this higher if The Exchange was not a sequel to The Firm。 。。。more

Bo „The Exchange” jest takim sequelem。 Autor dość zręcznie zresztą wplata w jej treść opisy życiowej drogi bohaterów, poprzedzającej nawet nieco akcję „Firmy”。 。。。more

terrible plot disappointingGrisham failed the fans of the firm with this sequel。 Instead of having the former Bendini law firm partners or the mob behind it be the perpetrators of the kidnapping to get back at what Mitch did to them years before, Grisham has an unknown terrorist group succeed fleecing the new firm Mitch works at。 Disappointing indeed。

This novel was truly disappointing。 Writing a sequel to The Firm sounded exciting。 This book is not in the same league as The Firm。 Except for using a few of the characters names this is in no way a sequel。 This is as usual well written but ultimately a boring book with boring characters。 Basically it’s a hack job。 It’s not a courtroom thriller or really a thriller at all。 John Grisham probably dashed this off just to make some more money。 I haven’t enjoyed much of his later works and it’s doubt This novel was truly disappointing。 Writing a sequel to The Firm sounded exciting。 This book is not in the same league as The Firm。 Except for using a few of the characters names this is in no way a sequel。 This is as usual well written but ultimately a boring book with boring characters。 Basically it’s a hack job。 It’s not a courtroom thriller or really a thriller at all。 John Grisham probably dashed this off just to make some more money。 I haven’t enjoyed much of his later works and it’s doubtful I’ll pick up another book by him after this slap dash boring book。 Can’t see Tom Cruise reprising his role after he reads this。 。。。more
